![]() Clayton Kershaw (credits below) We'll keep it simple today as the season is winding down: If the Red Sox ultimately miss the playoffs, the question will be asked, who had a swifter, larger fall from grace, the Red Sox or Charlie Sheen? The Red Sox wake up Sunday with 1.5 game lead and a doubleheader with the Yankees, if the Rays win on Sunday it will be all tied up. Top pitchers: Clayton Kershaw, Roy Halladay, Tim Lincecum, Derek Holland, Ivan Nova. The hottest of that group is Clayton Kershaw (3-0, 0.99 ERA, over the last 3 weeks) as he makes his push for his well deserved NL CY Young. Interestingly, one of the coldest pitchers in the league, John Lackey (0-2, 10.76 ERA, over the last 3 weeks) will be pitching in a must win game against the Yankees. Midway through the season, people always like to bash the existence of the wild card, without the wild card there would be no excitement heading into the last week of the season. The Braves and Cardinals are engaged in their own wild card drama. The Braves have not played well, but they are playing far better than the Red Sox. Unfortunately for the Braves, the Cardinals are just playing that well as they have won 13 of their last 17. The only other drama, is whether or not Matt Kemp will win the triple crown and if he does, will he win the MVP? He is certainly making a strong push for both with a .560, 4, 8 batting line over the last week. On this day in 1961, the real single season home run king, Roger Maris, tied Babe Ruth's single season home run record. Written by Chris Summers exclusively for www.thefantasyfix.com. Nothing makes me smile more than Red Sox fans swirling around in the toilet bowl of their own neurosis. FYI, they still lead the wild card by four with fourteen games left to play. That being said, they have Tampa coming into town for four HUGE games. At least they have Jacoby Ellsbury (.500, 3, 9, 1.498 OPS), who could win the MVP even if the '11 Red Sox turn out to be the '04 Yankees. Now for a team that DOES deserve some sympathy...the Pittsburgh Pirates. They continue their record streak with their 19th straight losing season, a record, for American sports teams. Especially sad because they held a share of first place as late as July 25th...they were the feel good story of the first half. Unfortunately, the story ends exactly the same way it has ended the previous 18. The hottest pitchers over the last three weeks going tomorrow: Cliff Lee (2-0, .36 ERA); Randy Wells (3-0; 1.26 ERA); and, Dana Eveland (2-0, 0.60 ERA). Francisco Rodriguez is unhappy with his role as a setup man despite the fact both he, and the closer John Axford are thriving. Rodriguez has gone 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 25 appearances with Milwaukee, while Axford has a 0.99 ERA with 19 saves since Rodriguez joined the team. Francisco is getting paid $11.5 million to be on a team with a legit shot at the World Series, he is a free agent next year, he should keep his mouth shut, enjoy the ride, and sign to be a closer next year. Instead, the selfish prima donna's words threaten to tear apart a team on the cusp of the playoffs, well played. You know you are not a very good team when your season high win streak is four games, and you hit it with two weeks left in the season. YOUR 2011 ROYALS! I have a friend named Greg, skinny, perky always happy and cheery up until 10:00 on a Saturday night. I always warn him not to start taking stunt men shots too early in the evening, inevitably, he doesn't listen and I'm calling him a cab at 10. Essentially, he tends to peak early. The Brewers, unfortunately seem to have the same look as Greg when he belly's up to the bar. After an incredible run from late July through the end of June they are crashing back to earth. Up six games with fifteen left would be quite the meltdown, but let's not forget we thought they had this wrapped up a few weeks ago. To continue with the bar analogies, we have the Angels and Rangers out west. The Angels are that quintessential lady that just hangs around. There is nothing sexy about her, you have no interest in her but you know that she will be around at the end of the night. Here we are, with just a few weeks left and the Angels are once again on the cusp of stealing the American League West after a victory and another Rangers loss. Like that girl you took home from the bar, the Angels won't look that sexy when you see them in the morning, but they get the job done. Finally, we come to the Tampa Bay Rays and their attempt to steal a wild card spot from one of the two evil empires, the Red Sox or Yankees. If the Rays steal the spot from the Yankees or Red Sox and they find themselves on the outside looking in, they will feel like I did after downing one too many red bull and vodka's. Namely, waking up in a strange bed, in a strange part of town, only to stumble out of bed into the bathroom and then forget what room I came from. Said simply, all would feel disoriented and wonder what the f@&! just happened? Stars of the Day: Chris Denorffia of the Padres, 4-for-5 with 2 runs and Chris Heisey of the Reds, 3-for-4 with 2 home runs and 2 RBI's. The first time since high school either of these two were considered a star. Dan Haren threw a 4-hit shutout in a must game for the Angels as that "unsexy" chic continues to make the Texas Rangers a lit hot under the collar. Tim Hudson, Jon Lester and CJ Wilson are the top starters for today. CJ Wilson's start will be pressure packed as he attempts to stop the bleeding and defeat the A's. The Rangers need a big start as they attempt to hold off the Angels over the next few days. In a year when Josh Beckett looked like that young man that defeated the Yankees so many years ago, he is going to leave you hanging in the closing weeks of the season. Just like that girl at the bar that lets you buy her a few drinks, chat her up only to leave with the guy in the BMW. The Arizona D-Backs continue to roll stretching their home win streak to 15 games. The last time they were this good was 10 years ago, speaking of... 10-years ago today, the world witnessed a barbaric act that reshaped history. Today, in the midst of the opening weekend for the NFL, everyone will be reminiscing about what they were doing on that day we shall never forget. I remember, I was a few months out of college, in that limbo between school and finding a job. My father woke me up after the first plane hit the tower, the previous night's festivities left me unable to grasp the enormity of the situation so I fell back asleep. After the second plane hit, my father came back into my room and with the gravest face I've ever seen he shouted "Get your ass out of bed, another plane just hit." My father is not a swearing man. He lived through the depression, he was alive during World War II, the look on his face told me all I needed to know. So today, remember those who died, remember those who risked their lives to try to save them and remember those boys and girls on the front lines trying to make sure my father never has to swear like that again. He is the key to Detroit's confidence and literally keeping them in first place. Not only has Verlander only given up four runs or less in each of his last ten starts, he has won each of those games. Guillermo Moscoso of the Oakland A's just completed an amazing streak where he retired 30 straight batters over the last two starts. That included taking a no-hitter into the 8th inning against the Kansas City Royals. If Guillermo Moscoso was the pitching star, then Shelly Duncan was the hitting star after a 3 for 4 day with 2 home runs and 4 RBI's. Ian Kennedy, Ivan Nova and Cole Hamels stand above the rest of the pitchers going on Thursday. Jason Vargas, he of the 7-13 record and the 0-2, 6.62 ERA, stats over the past 3 weeks, "stands" below the rest. On this day in 1998, the baseball world reached its steroid era apex when Mark McGwire hit his 62nd home run. When he crossed home plate he was greeted by Sammy Sosa who said "I knew I shouldn't have gone with the generic brand of steroids." Years later, Sammy would lose his ability to speak English, whether or not this was related to steroid abuse or because he was scared of the baseball version of La Cosa Nostra is still up for debate. McGwire does not celebrate this historic achievement because he was not put on the earth to "talk about the past." Tim Wakefield failed once again to reach the 200 win plateau. It was not his fault this time as the Red Sox bullpen gave up five runs in the eighth inning to blow the geriatrics's chance at the magical 200 win number. With the Sox losing, the Yankees still stay 2 up. The Cardinals have managed to cool down the Brewers, as they have grabbed five out of six from the formerly hottest team in baseball. We could always assume that the Cardinals would make a run, but it might be too little, too late. Written by Chris Summers exclusively for www.thefantasyfix.com. ![]() Phil Hughes (credits below) Things do not look good for the Yankees as we head into September after a 9 to 5 loss to their nemesis, the Red Sox. The fact that they lost is not the troubling thing, the problem is that heading into September their supposedly second best pitcher has a 6.75 ERA (Phil Hughes). So heading into the playoffs is rookie Ivan Nova, their second best option? In addition, the rich get (somewhat) richer as the Red Sox picked up a bat from the A's, Conor Jackson. Ok, so he is not going to set the world on fire, but he is a pretty decent player to have on your bench. The Diamondbacks continue to streak toward the playoffs and the light on the Giants repeating as champions is fading faster than Charlie Sheen's career. The Giants are now 6 games back, it looks like Carlos Beltran was NOT the magic elixir they hoped for. In further signs of desperation, or just plain giving up, the Giants also designated Miguel Tejada and Aaron Rowand for assignment. It looks like this year "The Beard" won't make us yearn for the days before HD TV. Top Pitchers for Thursday: Tim Hudson, CJ Wilson, Yovani Gallardo, Ervin Santana and John Lester. Possibly the worst starter going on Thursday, following up on the Yankees theme, is AJ Burnett. He of the 13.86 ERA over the past 3 weeks, and essentially every time he takes the mound the Yankees start off two touchdowns in the hole. Good luck in the playoffs, if he is on the roster. I wonder if he is due a bonus for being on the post season roster. Jack Hannahan might be reaching his true potential with 3 home runs over the past two games; he only had 5 over his previous 98. Including 2 on Wednesday against the A's, his former team. Curtis Granderson is on the verge of a truly historic season. With a month left, the Grandy-Man, could become only the second player to lead the majors in home runs, RBI's and triples. The only other player to accomplish this is Jim Rice. Cliff Lee just finished off a perfect 4-0 August which also included 32 strikeouts in 31 innings and a minuscule 0.58 ERA. He extended his winning streak to 6 games. Also serving up a perfect August was Ricky Romero at 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA, he was the best pitcher in the American League over the past month. Unfortunately, going into September the only real pennant race is in the American League West. The Angeles failed to take advantage of a great game from Dan Haren and a loss by the Texas Rangers. The deficit is still 3.5 games. On this date in 2001, Sammy Sosa hit the longest (Steroid/corked bat fueled) home run in Turner Field history, a day that no baseball fan can forget...Sammy who? The Padres and Giants now have 48 hours to agree to a trade, otherwise Bell reverts back to the Padres. It might have just been a tactical move to block Arizona from claiming him, or it might speak to bigger issues with Brian "the beard" Wilson. Also in waiver news, the Yankees claimed Carlos Pena. Big game for Coco Crisp, 4 hits, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs as the A's once again beat the Yankees. Not to be outdone, Joey Votto had 5 hits, 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. Not a great list of starters throwing on Thursday, the top trio would have to be Ryan Vogelson, Jeremy Hellickson and Alexi Ogando. All pretty solid, but none are that inspiring. Aramis Ramirez takes home the hottest player of the week honors with a .636 avg, 2 home runs, 9 RBIs and 1.679 OPS. A bright spot in another wasted summer in Chicago. From the awwkkwwaard baseball files come this gem from nationalpastime.com, on this day in baseball history: Prior to the Old Timer's Game at Yankee Stadium, shortstop Phil Rizzuto is asked to consult with general manager George Weiss and manager Casey Stengel concerning a player move necessitated by reacquiring Enos Slaughter off waivers from the A's. After making several suggestions about who should be cut from the squad, the veteran infielder is told by Weiss he is the player about to be let go. The long, and literally, painful summer for A-Rod continues as he is once again sideline with an injury, this time a sprained left thumb. Maybe he should stick to the poker tables. It is a true testament to how putrid the A's were during the first half of the season that even with the 6th best team batting average since the all-star break they rank 26th in batting average for the year. He'll be sidelined for a couple of days with an inflammation in his elbow, but he did go to see the same doctor that previously operated on his elbow. This is a critical time for the Giants as they try to stay in the race in the West. Luckily for the Giants, their next four series are against Houston (twice), the Padres and the Cubs... not a threatening stretch. On more positive injury news, A-Rod is getting close to returning to the line-up, a Friday return is a possibility. Stephen Strasburg has not quite ironed out all the kinks just yet; he just gave up five runs over 1 2/3 innings to a bunch of guys who just went to prom. Special shout out to Jim Thome joining the 600 club. While you can trust nobody from the "steroid era," Thome is about as close as they will come. I do not know the man, but I have never seen or heard a bad word written about him. Congrats. Hottest player of the last week: Robinson Cano who is merely 13-for-26, with 3 home runs and 10 RBI's, which translates into a 1.557 OPS. Heavy Hitters are pitching today: CC Sabathia (he meets this definition in more ways than one), Tim Lincecum, Clayton Kershaw, Jered Weaver and sneaky Cy Young candidate Ian Kennedy. Ricky Romero will also put his hot streak on the line (4-0 with 1.15 ERA over the last three weeks) against the Oakland A's. During the first half of the season this would be a tasty match-up for Romero, but since the all-star break the A's are 5th in runs, 3rd in average and 3rd in OPS. If only they could match solid offense with solid pitching. Big day for Allen Craig of the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-for-5, 2 home runs and 3 RBI's. In 45 games this year his is putting up a very respectable .331, 6, 24 stat line. Also with 4 hits on the day, The Captain, Derek Jeter who has raised his average to .283 thanks to a .382 average in August. Matt Cain and David Price went eight innings without allowing an earned run, striking out 9 and 6, respectively. The not top player of the day has to go to Ricky Nolasco of the Marlins who was only able to fight the good fight for 3 innings giving up 11 hits and 11 earned runs during that time. Remember a month ago when there were whispers of a Pirate sighting in the Playoffs? Well the Brewers have only lost twice since July 25th, while the Pirates managed to squeeze in a ten game losing streak during that time. Add it up and you have the Pirates sitting with a double digit deficit. There is always next year. Written by Chris Summers exclusively for www.thefantasyfix.com. If only the Cubs were so lucky. Big Z has been a pain in the ass for years, whether it be showing up an opposing player after a strikeout or berating his own teammates. He deserved to be out of the league years ago. He is the type of poor example that has twelve year old kids taunting each other after a home run. The baseball world is better without him in it. Jorge Posada made the most of his playing time with a six RBI outburst in the Yankees victory against the Rays. Dan Uggla stretched his hitting streak to 33 games and bumped his batting average all the way to .232. If he continues this through the end of NEXT season he might reach .300. But, this week has been a particularly hot week, he is batting .444, 3 home runs and 6 RBI's. His hitting streak has not exactly ignited the Braves as they are 19-14 over that stretch. The Reds put up a seven spot in the "HR" category during a 13-1 drubbing of the Padres. The biggest stars of the day were Miguel Cairo (4 RBI's) and Ryan Hanigan (5 RBI's). The not-star of the day, Tim Stauffer, after giving up nine earned runs over three innings. Top pitchers throwing Sunday are Roy Halladay, Shaun Marcum, Dan Haren, and Ryan Vogelsong. Vogelsong's magic might slowly be wearing off. His ERA has risen more than half a run since the middle of June and he's coming off one of his worst outings of the season. Maybe we'll see if he is in it for the long hall, or if, his miracle run is slowly coming to an end. A player that probably deserves to be in that list of top pitchers is Hiroki Koroda. His 7-14 records is ghastly, but his ERA is just over 3.00. In the last three weeks he has been even better with a 2.45 ERA, but once again, the wins just are not there with a 1-3 record. Great week offensively for a couple of brewers, Prince Fielder (.545, 3 home runs, 10 RBI's, 1.638 OPS) and Yuniesky Betancourt (.462, 6 RBI's, 1.021 OPS) rank one and two in batting average over that span, respectively. The always dangerous Tim Lincecum showed why he is a two-time Cy Young winner in striking out ten on his way to a three hit, ten strikeout victory. Actually, that is really a half-truth or a one-third truth as he is on pace for 33 home runs and 80 RBI's. Great numbers for a second baseman. The Stephen Strasburg whispers are starting to gain momentum. He is available in A LOT of leagues, if he comes back in September, he could win a league for you. Justin Verlander, Yovani Gallardo, and Jonny Cueto headline the pitchers for Thursday. Verlander is trying to bounce back from a stretch where he has given up 3 or more runs in 3 of his last 5 starts (3, 0, 4, 1, 4). In a season where Verlander has a 2.30 ERA, this qualifies as an exceptionally frigid stretch. Albert Pujols on pace for .277 avg. 37 home runs and 97 RBI's which equates to his lowest home run total since 2007; lowest number of RBI's and lowest batting average in his career. How much money has he lost? Ok, probably none. It is that time of the year to start taking flyer's on some of the kids getting called up. No youngster is hotter than Houston's J.D. Martinez, not quite 11 complete games into his career: .282 avg, 4 home runs and 12 RBI's. Nobody is scared of Houston and they have no reason to not give J.D. plenty of playing time. Curtis Granderson hit his 31st home run, on his way to 4 RBI's. I know a lot of the AL MVP talk has focused on Adrian Gonzalez who is on pace for an impressive .348, 25, 128, .960 OPS, but what about Granderson? He does not have the average (.277 vs. .348), but he is on pace for more home runs (44 to 25), the same number of RBI's plus, he has the added dimension of speed, 22 stolen bases thus far. Both are good defensive players. Granderson deserves some serious MVP talk. At least for one night Ubaldo Jimenez was worth it for the Indians as he got the win on the way to giving up 3 runs over 8 innings in his home debut. This baseball season has been filed with tragic off field stories of fans being injured and in some cases dying. So it is wonderful news for the friends and family of Brian Stow, the beaten Giants fan, that he was raising his arms and legs in response to directions. Here is hoping he makes a complete recovery and the people responsible meet the "sisters" in the showers. From nationalpastime.com: On this date in 1945, during a 15-4 loss to Boston, the Senators had two pitchers make their first and only major league appearance. Two remarkable debut pitching performances by Senators' rookies: Joe Cleary, the last major leaguer to be born in Ireland, giving up seven runs on five hits and three walks in his only big league appearance to finish with a career ERA of 189.0, and in mop-up work, WW II veteran Bert Shepard, with an amputated leg as a result of being wounded in WW ll, hurls five 1/3 innings giving up just one run on just three hits in his only major league appearance. Also of note from nationalpastime.com: Dave Winfield kills a seagull at Exhibition Stadium with a warmup throw prior to the home fifth inning. After the 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays, the Yankees outfielder is arrested by the Ontario police and charged with animal cruelty. Not a lot of pitching depth throwing today, the best is Cliff Lee, who would be at the top of any list of the best pitchers in the game. From there, things are less exciting. Alexi Ogando, Justin Masterson, Madison Bumgarner round out the list. Also of note, two guys with no-hitters on their resumes, Anibal Sanchez and Francisco Liriano. Finally, the Red Sox latest rent-a-whore, Erik Bedard, will make his debut. Casey McGehee’s three home runs and 5 RBI's paced Milwaukee to a 10-5 victory over the Cardinals. There were no incidents after Tuesday’s tit-for-tat beaning of Albert Pujols and Ryan Braun. Also in that game, after a successful debut for his new team, Edwin Jackson got blown up, given up 14 hits and 8 earned runs. Michael Cuddyer also had 5 RBI's from a couple home runs in the Twins 11-4 victory over the Angels. Dan Uggla continued his hot streak by extending his hitting streak to 25 games. He also had another home run, his 11th since the start of July which nearly matches his total for the first 82 games (12). Anthony Rizzo had been on a tear since he went back to the minors with a 1.456 OPS. It is apparent he is not the next Ken Griffey, but lets hope the Padres did not trade the future AL MVP for the next Kevin Maas. Actually Maas, had a couple of 20 home run seasons, the Padres might be lucky to get that from the Rizz-kid. The Yankees brought out the big sticks today, 3 different players (Eric Chavez, Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano) had four or more RBI's in route to 23 hits and an 18-7 victory. Hideki Matsui has been on an absolute tear (15-26) over the last 7 days. He might be repeating last year's pattern where he did not heat up until after the all-star game. Unfortunately, he was not enough to prevent the Mariners' sweep of the A's. Tim Wakefield failed in his bid to win his 200th game, instead it was Jacoby Ellsbury stealing the show with his second straight walk-off hit. To top it off, it was not cheap, it was a home run. Ryan Vogelsong continues his dram comeback season with another win to run his record to 9-1 with a 2.19 ERA.
