![]() Ugh Dykstra... (credits below) Lenny Dystrka… what are we going to do with you? Exposing yourself, how high brow. It's well noted how insane the '86 Mets were and how many drugs they were taking, but… you have easily surpassed Dwight Gooden & Darryl Strawberry as the craziest of the bunch. Mazel Tov! Mr. Jeter you playa you. Done with Minka and on to the next? I will gladly take your sloppy seconds, unfortunately the sloppy seconds have higher standards that I can offer. A man can dream. Speaking of Pinstripe Playas, the Yankees made history last night in a 22-9 romp over none other than the not-so-Athletics. The Yankees became the first team in the history of baseball to hit 3 grand slams in a game. Robinson Cano, Russell Martin & Curtis Granderson all connected for grand salamis, with Martin going a perfect 5-5 with 2 home runs and 6 runs driven in. With the Red Sox winning 6-0 over Texas, the Yankees still stand 1 game behind. On the year the Yankees have scored 6 more runs than the Sox and 259 more than the Giants who have scored the least runs, but are shockingly only 3 games behind the Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West. Adrian Gonzalez slammed 2 out of the yard for his 22nd and 23rd on the year and is now hitting .348. Who would you vote for AL MVP? Granderson, Adrian Gonzalez or Verlander? Brandon Beachy continues his run, winning his 4th in a row without a loss and improving to 7-2 on the year. If you haven't checked out rookie JD Martinez yet, please do. He is riding a 5 game hitting streak, with 1 HR & 9 RBI. With little to no pressure playing in Houston, Martinez could blossom into a real fantasy stud by next year. Speaking of rookies, check out Paul Goldschmidt who hit his 5th homer of the year. It's all a game of averages. Remember when Albert Pujols was hitting .231 in May? Well he's up to .290 and proven that even on a down year, he is better than 99% of the players in the league. Today's pitching duel of the day goes to Dan Haren vs Derek Holland. Also hurling today is James Shields, Madison Bumgarner, Roy Oswalt & Obaldo Jimenez. Colby Lewis (7IP, 4H, 0R, 7K ) and Jered Weaver (7IP, 6H,1R,5K) duked it out before the home run. Clayton Kershaw improved to 15-5, completely dominating the Brewers over 8 innings. Kershaw is now tied for wins and leads the NL in K's. Ian Kennedy & Vance Worley only pitched 3 innings before a 2 hour rain delay. Kennedy took the loss and stands at 15-4 on the year. Rookie stud Paul Goldschmidt hit his 4th homer for Arizona and Philadelphia's John Mayberry Jr hit his 10th. When is the last time you've seen a pitcher with a 2.53 ERA and 11-10 record? Tim Lincecum this Bud's for you. Both the Yanks and Red Sox won last night, keeping the Pinstripes 1/2 game up. CC Sabathia definitely wasn't on top of his game giving up 10 hits over 7 innings but when you have a team that averages close to 5.5 runs a game, it's hard not to get the win. Comparatively, the Giants average 2 runs less a game and thus their stud pitchers have crappy records. Sabremetrics at its best? Runs=Wins? Alex Rodriguez will most likely not return today from the DL as earlier reported and more likely return Saturday. The Palm Beach Post reported that Hanley Ramirez could possibly miss the remainder of the season. Cleveland's 2B, Jason Kipnis, is headed to 15-day DL. He definitely proved he can hit in the majors, going yard 4 times in an 8 game stretch at the beginning of the month. Ol Man Konerko blasted his 28th homer of the year. Paul has racked up 9 seasons of 27 homers or more. Ricky Romero three-hit the A's in a complete shutout. It was his 2nd shutout of the season. Tim Stauffer bounced back from his worst performance of the season (3IP, 9R), holding the Marlins in check over 7 innings. Had it not been for the bad outing against the Reds, Stauffer's ERA would stand under 3.00. I wouldn't say that there is a specific matchup worth going out of your way to watch today, but plenty of studs are hurling including Jaime Garcia, Roy Oswalt, Max Scherzer, Felix Hernandez, Shaun Marcum, Daniel Hudson, Ryan Vogelsong, & Dan Haren. Justin Verlander won his league leading 17th game, giving up 3 runs and striking out 10 against the Tribe. Although he does have some strong competition for the Cy Young, no one can deny the fact that he leads the league in wins, strikeouts, WHIP & BAA, plus has a no-hitter under his belt. Bryce Harper just can't seem to play it cool. Harper was ejected after getting in the umpire's face over a strike 3 call. We may need to get this kid his own Yoda or Mr. Miyagi. Albert Pujols led the Cardinals over the Brew Crew going 4-4 with a home run. Since the AS Break, Big Bad Albert is averaging a homer every 11.2 AB compared to the first half of the season where he was hitting one every 16.67. Chris Carpenter improved to 8-8 on the year and is 7-1 in his last 10 starts. Johnny Cueto bounced back after a bad start against the Cubs. He shutout the Rockies over 7 innings and held them to only 3 hits. Cueto's 1.94 ERA is only behind Jered Weaver's 1.78 ERA for league best. Robinson Cano slapped a grand-salami in the win over the Angels. Curtis Granderson also hit his 32nd dinger of the year, tying him with Tex for 2nd best behind Bautista. The Yanks are 1 game behind the Sox for 1st place. Cameron Maybin continues to shine in 2011. He hit his 7th homer but more importantly swiped 2 to give him 29 on the year. Red-hot rookie Jesus Guzman also stole his 7th base against the Mets. Desmond Jennings keeps showing off his speed hitting his 3rd triple in just 72 AB. More on the rookie front, JD Martinez knocked in another 2 runs for the Astros and on the other side Paul Goldschmidt pinch-hit his 2nd homer. Carlos Beltran on the other hand went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts in his first game as a Giant. The Giants beat the Phils anyway behind Tim Lincecum's shutout ball through 6 innings. Colby Rasmus didn't fare well either in his first game as a Jay. He went 0-5 with 2 strikeouts. Bad news for Rickie Weeks owners. Different sources have his rehab time anywhere from 2-6 weeks. Mike Stanton hit his 4th moon shot in the last 7 games. Teammate Emilio Bonifacio extended his hitting streak to 26 games and also stole his 24th base. ESPN's Adam Schechter said on The Mike&Mike Show that he believes Hunter Pence will be dealt in the next 48 hours. Led by Mark Trumbo, the Angels beat the Tigers 12-7. Trumbo was a lousy single shy of the cycle and hit his 19th home run of the year. Dustin Pedroia extended his hitting streak as well with a solo bomb in the 8th. He is one behind Bonifacio at 25. Boston lost to the Royals and the Yankees now stand 2.5 games back. Heath Bell, Joel Hanrahan & John Axford each notched their 30th saves of the year. Superstud, Desmond Jennings continues to demolish anything that stands in his way. Against Oakland, Jennings went 3-4 with a HR, SB, 4 RBI & 2 Runs. Through his first 6 games he is hitting a nice even .500. Justin Upton kept up his hot streak with a double and stolen base. Brother BJ Upton homered for the first time since 13 games ago. In Vlad Guerrero's 2nd game back off the DL, he homered and stole a base. It will be interesting to see how he finishes up the year. Hot streak coming?? Scott Baker (7 IP, 2 ER) was outdueled by Matt Harrison (7.1 IP, 1 ER). Baker still has an ERA under 3.00. Two matchups I will be keeping an eye on today are Matt Garza @Edwin Jackson & Francisco Liriano @Gio Gonzalez. This will be Jackson's first start as a Cardinal. Also hurling today is Roy Halladay, Alexi Ogando, Ryan Vogelsong, & Brandon Beachy. Today marks the return of Chien-Ming Wang who will start for the Nationals against Dillon Gee and the Mets. McCann left last night's game after straining his left oblique. You are not going to love your options off the waiver wire, but if you can brunt the lowly .213 average, J.P. Arencibia is the probably most attractive pickup at 42% owned. Also hitting in the hot weather as of late is Jarrod Saltalamacchia (13%), who is riding a 5-game hitting streak with 2 homers in that stretch. As if the baseball god's felt a bit bad for the loss of McCann, the Braves beat the Pirates in the 19th inning on a blown call by home plate umpire Jerry Meals. Julio Lugo scored the winning run, ending the almost 7 hour standoff and stuck to his story of not being tagged. The Marlins beat up on Jordan Zimmerman, giving him his 2nd loss in a row with 6 runs scored. Emilio Bonifacio continued his hot streak going 2-4 with 2 runs and extending his hit-streak to 24 games. In that stretch he has scored 25 runs, 9 multi-hit games, and 17 stolen bases. Hot Damn! Brett Talley may believe Vance Worley is ready for some regression, but Vance had no intentions of starting the downtrend just yet. Worley pitched a complete game against the Giants last night, holding them to 3 hits and 2 runs. He is now 7-1 on the year. Ryan Howard (20), Chase Utley (7) and John Mayberry (6) provided the bombs. CC Sabathia toyed with the Mariners, happily handing them their 17th straight loss. CC pitched 7 innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 run and K'd a whopping 14. He won his league leading 15th game. Jose Bautista was drilled in the head by Jake Arrieta and fell to the ground for a few minutes. J-Bot seemed to be ok, but its pretty likely they will rest him for at least a game or two. Brandon Morrow got rocked by the O's, lasting 3.1 innings and giving up 6 earned runs. Derek Lee went 4-5 and drove in 5 runs, easily his best performance in a rather dismal year. Jered Weaver squeaked by the Tribe to win his 14th game of the season. His 1 earned run lowered his ERA to 1.79, still well below anyone in the league. Weaver has 13 straight quality starts in a row dating back to May 18th. He also has eight wins in a row. Justin Verlander also won his 14th game of the season, although he gave up 4 runs, raising his ERA from 2.24 to 2.34. Believe it or not, Adam Dunn hit his 10th home run of the season in the first inning off Verlander. His 1-4 performance raised his average to .161. Dustin Pedroia went 4-5 with 3 runs and raised his average back up above .300. Big Papi also went 4-5 and drove in 5 runs. Andew Miller got rocked again and although he may have a bright future with the Sox, his 5.45 ERA and 1.88 WHIP show that he may not completely be ready to consistently compete at the major league level. Johnny Cueto gave up 6 runs to the Mets but luckily for his 1.88 ERA, all were unearned. Chris Davis is 3-16 since being called up on Saturday. Aramis Ramirez hit another bomb yesterday. In July he is batting .325 with 9 home runs and 22 RBI. Albert Pujols just keeps hitting jacks. He has hit 5 in 11 games since the ASB. Justin Upton continues his red hot streak, hitting his 18th homer of the season against the Padres. Upton is riding a 7-game hitting streak, with 3 home runs, 13 RBI and 7 runs. Clayton Kershaw won his 12th game, beating Jhoulys Chacin and the Rockies 3-2. Kershaw's 6 strikeouts keeps him atop the league with 173 total. ![]() Desmond Jennings Tampa Bay Rays' outfielder Desmond Jennings was recalled from Triple-A Durham. Analysts all over the internet are wondering if this move means B.J. Upton could be on the move. In a game of who's the worst pitcher, Phil Hughes and Trevor Cahill gave up a combined 17 runs. If you think that Hughes' 7 earned runs in 4.1 innings was bad, think again. Cahill lasted 2 innings and gave up 10 runs. It was in 3rd inning where the damage was done, starting off with a 3-run Nick Swisher bomb and finishing with a Mark Teixeira grandy-salami. The Yanks won 17-7. In another wallop, Texas crushed Toronto 12-2, almost solely behind Nelson Cruz's 8 RBI's. Cruz went 4-4 with 4 runs and hit his 22nd dinger. The only 2 runs scored by Toronto were by JP Arencibia's 2 solo shots, his 13th and 14th of the year. Carlos Gonzalez hit the 15-day DL with a strained right wrist. The Rockies called up Eric Young, Jr. to replace him. Dexter Fowler fell a home run short of a cycle in the Rockies win over the Diamondbacks last night. He added an RBI and scored twice in the contest. At just 14% owned in Y! leagues, Fowler looks to be a solid short-term add for those looking to replace CarGo. Vernon Wells hit a grand slam in the 9th, the first by an Angel in almost a year. Rookie phenom, Mike Trout, went 2-4 with 2 runs and recorded his first stolen base. Aramis Ramirez keeps knocking em out of the park. He hit his 18th home run and so far has avoided the injury bug that has plagued him the last 2 years. With Stephen Drew out for the year, Willie Bloomquist looks to get regular time at Short Stop for the Diamondbacks. Position versatility plus potential speed makes this veteran an interesting option for those fantasy owners in need. Willie is currently owned in just 10% of Y! leagues. No surprise here, Cole Hamels was dominate yet again and ate the poor little Padres for breakfast. Hamels went 8 strong, allowed 1 run off 3 hits and K'd 10. Even with the Cy-Young like season Hamels is having, it was only the 2nd time he whiffed 10. Like I said in yesterday's Daily Fix, Albert Pujols has a lot of catching up to do in the 2nd half. I didn't necessarily mean he had to do it all yesterday. Pujols went 4-5 and hit his 2nd home run in as many days. He now has 4 home runs since the all-star break. Chris Carpenter wasn't spectacular (8IP,10H,4ER) but earned his 5th straight win against the Bucs. Jair Jurrjens didn't last long enough to get the win, but Craig Kimbrel did earn his league leading 31st save. Prado (10), Heyward (11), McCann (17) and Uggla (18) all homered. For the Reds, rookie shortstop Zack Cozart hit his 2nd home run. Can't believe I'm saying this, but, the pitching duel I'm most looking forward to watching today is Jaime Garcia vs. Kevin Correia. R.I.P. Amy Winehouse, who was found dead at the age of 27. Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison also passed at 27. Creepy. ![]() Jason Kipnis (see credits below) "Mr. DL", Grady Sizemore, is sidelined yet again this time for 4-6 weeks. Although this is bad news Sizemore, it is good news for Jason Kipnis. Kipnis was doing more than fine at Triple-A Columbus hitting .279 with 12 homers and 12 steals. He will get the start tonight against the White Sox. I've already picked him up to at least fill in tonight for Dan Uggla who left Wednesday's game with a burning sensation in his left calf. Carlos Gonzalez re-aggravated his right wrist from earlier in the year and there is a possibility he could hit the DL. We should have further info today. Kyle Blanks will be rejoining the Padres after smashing the ball in Triple-A with a 1.137 OPS! On the downside, the "Savior of San Diego", Anthony Rizzo, has been optioned back to Tucson. David Wright is supposed to come off the DL today and rejoin the team against the Marlins. It's good news for fantasy owners who have been without their stud third baseman since mid-May, but his return probably won't make much of a difference for the Mets who stand 12.5 games behind Philadelphia. Albert Pujols hit his 3rd home run in the last 6 games since the All-Star break. He has some major catching up to do in the 2nd half if he wants his numbers to look anything like they normally do at the end of the season. After putting together a string of relatively good performances, Javier Vazquez fell right back into his horrid 2011 season. San Diego tagged Javy for 5 runs in 4.1 innings. Vazquez may be the leading strikeout king of the last 10 years but his 82 K's in 107 innings isn't anything to brag about. On any other day, CJ Wilson's 8 innings of 2 hit ball would earn him the win. Unfortunately he was matched against Jered Weaver, who held Texas scoreless and earned his 13th win. Weaver lowered his league leading ERA to 1.81. Like Wilson, CC Sabathia got the short end of the stick throwing 8 innings of 2 run ball against the Rays, denying his 15th win. Instead, Jamie Shields, (who has joined the elite this year) won his 9th game holding the Yanks to 1 run over 7.2. Evan Longoria popped his 12th homer of the year. Justin Verlander won his 13th game, tying him with Weaver and 1 behind Sabathia. Verlander pitched 8 innings, holding the Twins to 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 9. His 162 K's are best in the AL and only 5 behind Clayton Kershaw for best in the league. Jhonny Peralta continued his all-star like year going 3-4 and hitting his 15th homer. Ian Kennedy outdueled Zack Greinke. Kennedy held Milwaukee to 4 hits and improved to 11-3 on the year. Justin Upton, Miguel Montero and Kelly Johnson had his back all going yard in the 4-0 win. The best pitching matchup of the day goes to Shaun Marcum in San Francisco against Matt Cain. Plenty of big names hurling today though like Cole Hamels, Felix Hernandez, Daniel Hudson, Max Scherzer, Colby Lewis, Jair Jurrjens, Trevor Cahill, Phil Hughes, Chris Carpenter & Bud Norris. Rapture has been put off until at least October, Roger Clemens is a free man for the time being and the NFL lockout seems to be coming to an end. Plus we had the first MLB games of the 2nd half to digest. So here we go! Toronto spanked the Yankees silly 16-7, not even letting Bartolo Colon get out of the first inning. Lucky for Colon's ERA, he was only charged with 3 of the 8 runs scored in 2/3 of an inning. MLB record holder of most starts without a win (28) Jo Jo Reyes miraculously got his 5th win even though he gave up 7 runs. Eric Thames' 2 doubles and 3 RBI's led the Jays. Jose Bautista twisted his right ankle while sliding and is listed as day-to-day. Fingers crossed, it's a quick heal. Of the Jays' 16 runs, no home runs were hit. Carlos Santana started off the 2nd half trying to correct his first half woes. He went 2-5 and hit his 14th home run of the year. His .233 average is disgusting, but I would take advantage of the situation and try to make a trade before he heats for the rest of the year. In a great pitching matchup, neither Anibal Sanchez nor Matt Garza got the decision. Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz crushed homers giving Derek Holland the 5-0 win over Jason Vargas and the Mariners. Holland pitched his 2nd straight complete game shutout after having a string of bad starts. One should note that although Holland has been narsty the last two, the games were against Oakland and Seattle. His next 3 starts should be against the Angels, Twins & Toronto and if he keeps up the stellar pitching hopefully he can win 2 of the 3. The bad luck continues for Madison Bumgarner who again pitched a gem and again couldn't muster the win. He went 6 innings and only gave up 1 run. Aaron Harang actually outpitched Bumgarner, throwing 7 scoreless innings but didn't receive the win either. San Fran scored 5 in the 12th to win 6-2. Ubaldo Jimenez continues his rebound trek easily beating Yovani Gallardo and the Brew Crew. The window to buy low on Ubaldo is quickly closing. Both Gallardo & Jimenez drove in runs in the 2nd inning. Wonder when the last time that happened? In the battle of the bottom dwellers, Minnesota beat the Royals 8-4 behind Francisco Liriano, who continues his up and down season. His 4.76 ERA is making me seasick... I'm giving the pitching matchup of the day to Andrew Miller vs David Price. Let's see if Miller can go against a big boy and win his 4th of the year. As usual below are 5 players owned in 50% or less of Yahoo Leagues and also a special AL-only & NL-only pick at the end. Good luck to all in the 2nd half! Bobby Parnell, NYM (25% owned) Parnell has the slight edge over Jason Isringhausen as the top choice to take over closer responsibilities now that K-Rod is in Milwaukee. Izzy is more experienced as a closer but is a bit old now. In 24.2 innings Parnell has a 2.92 ERA and is averaging 1.23 K's per inning. Denard Span, Twins (36%) Span has been on the DL since June 9th, but has been cleared to begin rehab. This may a more appropriate play next week once we are certain Span is completely healthy, but if you have the space on your roster, stash him for a week and reap the rewards in runs and stolen bases. Brad Lidge, Phillies (49%) Lidge is inching his way back to returning to the Phillies, hopefully by the end of the month or sooner. Bastardo has been more than excellent closing, but chances are that the Phils will feel more than obligated to give the role back to Lidge sooner than later. Stay tuned. Aroldis Chapman, Reds (40%) Everyone knows Chapman has the skills. At this point it may be that he just needs the opportunity to arise. Francisco Cordero has given up 7 runs in the last 4 appearances and blown 3 saves. The Reds will allow Cordero to rebound after the All-Star Break, but there's a damn good chance of Chapman stepping in if there is one more mishap in the next week. Javier Vazquez, Marlins(26%) With an ERA over 5.00, almost everyone has given up on Vazquez being fantasy relevant this year, but for those paying attention, you'll notice he has been a stud in the last 3 games and even the 2 before that were pretty nice. Historically Vazquez has been best in July and slightly better in almost all categories after the break. Totally worth a shot. AL only Jeanmar Gomez, Indians (0%) Gomez is starting Sunday, taking the place of Mitch Talbot who hit the 15-Day DL. In 4 appearances earlier in the year, Gomez held a not too pretty 4.91 ERA, but he should have a good chance of sticking with the team the remainder of the year. He's got the stuff, now he just has to show it. NL only Alex Presley, Pirates (8%) Through 13 games, Presley has more than impressed, batting .365 with 9 runs and 6 RBI. He looks like he has locked up left field over Xavier Paul and on a young Pirates team he can learn while having fun too. ![]() Mike Trout Derek Jeter's pursuit to 3,000 will have to wait at least another day as heavy rain postponed the Tampa Bay game. Nineteen year-old Mike Trout, the top prospect in baseball, was promoted to the Big Show for last night’s Angels game. The youngster went 0-for-3 at the plate, but made an incredible running catch in his Major League debut. Trout should be owned in all formats. Rickie Weeks smacked an inside-the-park home run last night, his 17th of the season. Not sure those would count for his upcoming appearance in the Home Run Derby during the All-Star Game. Big Surprise: David O’Brien of the AJC is reporting that Chipper Jones is considering missing the All-Star Game due to a right knee injury. Travis Snider is doing all he can to prove he belongs on the Blue Jays roster. Friday night certainly helped his case going 3-5 with a home run 5 RBI. Since rejoining the team on July 4th, Snider is 9-22. Rajai Davis swiped his 23rd & 24th bag of the season. Aramis Ramirez tear continues, hitting his 11th home run in the past 15 games. Through that run he is batting .381 with 17 RBI. We didn't even have to wait until after the All-Star Break for Hanley Ramirez to come around. He went 3-3, a home run and 3 RBI. Zach Britton, maybe you should give a call to Madison Bumgarner or Jaime Garcia and see how they coped with some of the worst performances ever. Boston demolished Britton, as he only lasted 2/3 of an inning and gave up 7 earned runs. Josh Beckett left the Red Sox-Orioles game early for precautionary reasons with an apparent left knee injury. Scott Sizemore hit his 3rd home run in the last 6 games. Javy Guerra (3), David Hernandez (7), Jose Valverde (23), Mat Capps (14), Leo Nunez (24), Joel Hanrahan (26) and Huston Street (25) each earned saves last night.
