This injury has been an issue for Jimenez since this spring, and resurfaced in his first start of the season against the Arizona Diamondacks, where he allowed six runs, five of them earned, in a six inning no decision. During that game, it was reported that Jimenez had difficulties gripping the ball, which is probably the biggest reason that he got knocked around against one of the weaker lineups in the league. Since then, Jimenez owners have had to deal with the headaches and frustrations of inconsistent and vague reports of how this injury would effect him moving forward. It was first thought that he'd have his upcoming start on Thursday pushed forward to Friday. It was then speculated that it would be pushed back, further still, to Saturday. And finally, Jimenez has been moved to the disabled list, and is eligible to return on April 17. Given the nature of the injury, it’s likely that Jimenez should not miss any more time and should return when he’s eligible to. Obviously this is a blow to Jimenez owners, especially in head-to-head leagues. However, there are still options available out there to have as spot starters to replace him while he’s out. Edwin Jackson (53% owned in Yahoo!, 29.1% owned in ESPN) For those in shallow leagues, Edwin Jackson makes a great grab, and could even stick in your lineups long term. Jackson threw a gem against Cleveland in his last start, getting the win in the six inning effort. In the start, Jackson allowed five hits, four walks, three runs, two of which were earned, and racked up seven strikeouts. Jackson is set to start next against a Tampa Bay lineup that looked punchless against Baltimore even before it lost Evan Longoria, and now Manny Ramirez is expected to also miss the game due to personal reasons. Expect another strong game from Jackson tomorrow. Erik Bedard (28% owned in Yahoo!, 7.3% owned in ESPN) Given the way that Texas has been pounding the ball, Bedard had a pretty good start considering it was his first in twenty months. In five innings, Bedard gave up five runs, three of them earned, along with four hits and two walks, and only striking out three. He gets to pick on a much weaker Cleveland Indians lineup in his next start, and you should get a solid return on your investment, especially in the strikeout department. Brandon Beachy (25% owned in Yahoo!, 7.4% owned in ESPN) Beachy looked great in last start against Milwaukee, finishing with a line of four hits, one walk, one run, and seven strikeouts in six innings. In his next start on Saturday, he gets an overrated Phillies lineup and should see his early success carry over to this game as he continues to get more comfortable in the big leagues. Mike Minor (7% owned in Yahoo!, 1.1% owned in ESPN) The man that lost his job to Beachy, Minor was the preseason favorite to land the fifth spot in the Braves rotation. With Jair Jurrjens set to miss his next two starts, Minor has gotten the call to fill in. Minor gets his first start tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers, so those in daily leagues should run to the wire and grab him now. Even if you miss tonight’s start, he’s still slated to throw one more game, and if he finishes with a strong game tonight, don’t expect to see him on the waiver wire for very long. Justin Masterson (9% owned in Yahoo!, 0.6% owned in ESPN) Truth be told, I wasn’t all that impressed with Masterson’s last start, especially because he was unable to strike out a single batter. But he was able to hold an extremely hot Chicago White Sox lineup to seven hits and two walks over seven innings while only allowing one run. However, he gets to face Seattle in his next start, where he should post a similar line with some more strikeouts. Alexi Ogando (11% owned in Yahoo!, 5.3% owned in ESPN) Ogando was my flavor of the week as a streamable starter this week, and he didn’t disappoint in his debut as a starter. Ogando held a weak Seattle lineup to only two hits and two walks, while striking out four over six innings. Texas has a recent history of having converted relievers get turned into good starters, but I’m wary that Ogando will get exposed on Monday, when he’s set to pitch against the Detroit Tigers. But if you really want to roll the dice, Ogando could have another one or two good starts left before hitters and scouting reports catch up to him.
