Tonight is truly a historic match-up.

Two teams battling for the first overall pick AND to only be one game out of the division lead after 11 games.

The people at ESPN must be going apoplectic trying to sell advertising revenue. Things being what they are, the winner of this game will have the sterling record of 4-7 and be a mere one game behind Seattle and Saint Louis.

Quick aside, where does Sam Bradford's season rank amongst the great rookie QBs?  Peyton Manning and Dan Marino were both brilliant—if Bradford continues at this pace, doesn't he have to rank with them? His best receiver is Danny Amendola, no offense to Danny, but he wasn't even the first pick in his family's annual Turkey day game (ok, I made that up). Can you tell I'm trying to waste time and not talk about tonight's game?

Let's be honest, neither team is very good, and that's coming from a life-long Niner fan, but facts are facts.

The Niners have played better recently, winning three of five. Had they been more adept at closing out games they'd be in first place.

Troy Smith has looked mostly adequate and sometimes spectacular. This up and down is all too common with Niner QB's named "Smith."

Frank Gore has been solid all year despite the incredibly unimaginative play calling. At least five times a game they will run him right up the middle where he'll be stopped cold; at least twice a game they'll follow up that play with the exact same play and encounter the exact same result. So basically, the personification of the definition of insanity.

The Niners' receiving targets are a pure gamble because the QB and play calling prevents them from reaching full potential. That being said, the Cardinals are middle of the road in points allowed to opposing QB's and WR's, so you have a puncher's chance.

Do you think the Cardinals regret letting Matt Leinart go? Max Hall is not ready for prime time (hard to imagine considering he's an undrafted 25-year-old rookie) and Derek Anderson is somehow still dining out on a ten game stretch from 2007.

Look, Leinart is not great, but he showed flashes as a rookie and since then, has never really been given a clear shot to start; why not give him a season? Honestly, was he any worse than what they've trotted out there each week? The QB's merry-go-round has destroyed the value of possibly the best receiver in the game, Larry Fitzgerald and has hampered a once decent running attack.

As a Niner fan, I'll pick them to win on the road, but I don't feel good about it. Either way, tonight's fan bases will either be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes or in the hunt for the division crown. Are you ready for some football?

New England Patriots at Detroit Lions

As more than one commentator has noticed, the Patriots are employing the same game plan that made them the dominant team for the first part of the 21st century. They are spreading the ball around to a bunch of unsung heroes on offense; have a bend but don't break defense, and the magnificently maned Tom Brady is leading the way.

The Lions continue to display the winning spirit that has left them without a playoff season for over a decade.  The Lions best hope; New England fails to survive this classic trap game.  They just played an emotional game against the Colts on Sunday night, now they play at Detroit on short rest, followed by a HUGE Monday night showdown with the Jets.

The interesting thing about the Patriots is that they don't have a lot of fantasy stars beyond Tom Brady.  BenJarvis Green-Ellis is a useful no. 2 RB, and against the woeful Detroit D he's a low-end #1.  All Danny Woodhead does is score on a long draw play ever week, so he is also a useful starter.  But, you can't trust the TE's... if you could combine the two into one player, he'd be a monster, but you are rolling the dice any other way. Wes Welker in a PPR, yes, Deion Branch, I guess if you are desperate.

For the Lions, Calvin Johnson is an obvious start as their best player and they'll be behind and need to throw, which also means Shaun Hill is a good start.  Finally, the Patriots defense isn't great and teams move the ball on them.

Still, this looks like another boring thanksgiving blowout staring the Detroit Lions disguised as the Washington Generals.

Picture
New Orleans Saints at Dallas Cowboys

At the beginning of the year, this looked like a potential battle for NFL supremacy.

Now the biggest questions heading into this week are:

Was Jason Garret holding back the creative play calling in an attempt to get Wade Phillips fired?  (The answer is no, Wade didn't need any help)

Is Jon Kitna a better fit for this team?  (The answer, maybe.  This leads to another question, if the Cowboys go on a miracle run and are 7-7 in week 15 and Romo is ready, does he start?)

The amazing thing is how Jon Kitna always seems to perform when given the opportunity.  Also, how much does he love Dez Bryant?  There hasn't been this much man love since Wes Mantooth rescued Ron Burgundy from the bear pit.

Miles Austin is a beast but Kitna's made him irrelevant in that offense, and we know how good Austin is.

The Cowboys will throw because that is what they are good at and their running game is sickly.

Finally, would someone please explain to me why Tashard Choice doesn't get more runs?  Felix Jones is worthless unless he breaks one, Marion Barber is nice at the goal line but aside from that he can't do anything. How about giving the other guy a shot?

The Saints seem to be rounding into form and they are starting to get healthy... let's not forget, these are the defending champs.

Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas might play. The return of Reggie should an especially nice addition for Drew Brees as he really seemed to suffer when Reggie went down.  That being said, Chris Ivory filled in nicely, but with those two coming back he'll return to his spot on the bench.

The Saints are stout against the pass, while the Cowboys are mediocre against the run and the pass.  This looks like a shootout and the best game of the day. This is a big statement game for the Saints – the Cowboys are talented and playing with nothing to lose on national TV.  Normally a championship team like the Saints goes into Dallas and wins this game; but this is a wacky season, so I think the Cowboys pull off the upset and revive the "Cowboys playing the Super Bowl in their own stadium debate."

Picture
Cincinnati Bengals at New York Jets
The Bengals absolutely collapsed last week. They are more disjointed than watching a bunch of drunk guys trying to put away a pop-up tent on the 4th of July.  When you meltdown to Steve "Why so serious" Johnson and the Buffalo Bills, you really need to re-evaluate things.

On a side note, the Bills fans had to be torn. On one hand they witnessed an exciting comeback, on the other they fell behind the Panthers in the race for Andrew Luck.  That being said, we aren't concerned with win/loss records and the Bengals remain amazingly relevant in fantasy circles.

TO and Carson Palmer are both top ten in their position and Cedric Benson is coming off a very nice game.  But, the Jets have a stifling run defense, so Cedric Benson owners shouldn't get too excited, and should look for a substitute.

The Jets haven't been great against the pass, so Palmer and company could be in for a decent game, especially if they are getting blown out.

The Jets just keep finding ways to win, but in doing so they might be playing with fire.  You can't expect Santonio Holmes to score a last second TD every week.  All the dramatic connections between Sanchez and Holmes show they are finally comfortable with each other and makes Holmes a clear-cut no. 1 receiver.

The RB position is up in the air with neither Tomlinson or Greene receiving the bulk of the carries.  It stands to reason that as the season winds down Greene will receive more carries in an attempt to rest LT.  But, Greene has a bit of a fumbling problem and in a close divisional race, I don't think Rex Ryan will want to take any chances.

As mentioned earlier, this is another potential trap game. The Jets are coming off back-to-back last second victories and now are facing a team that looks like it quit. Plus the Patriots are looming...

The Bengals have a lot of proud players, say what you want about Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens, but they give it their all on the field (and on VH1) after last week's embarrassment plus a national TV audience, I sense a bounce back game.  Still, I just don't see the Bengals being able to keep up with the Jets at home.

Phillip Rivers
Tonight's Monday Night clash is a big game for both teams, a win by SD keeps them just one game off the division lead, a Denver win means both teams are two games back.  As usual San Diego seems to get better as the season progresses, they've won 7 straight November games, maybe because Norv Turner's neck resembles that of a turkey.

Nobody really talks about the incredible season being had by Philip Rivers; he is on pace to break Dan Marino's single season yardage record and last week his biggest weapon the immortal Seyi Ajirotutu.  The announcers and analysts breathlessly extol the virtues Peyton Manning and what he has accomplished this year with a bunch of injuries, but Manning's had Wayne to throw to every game this year, look at Philip Rivers.  Rivers began the season without his top WR (Vincent Jackson), a rookie running back and some "high-potential" guys at the WR position (Malcolm Floyd and Legadu Naannee).  Yes, he has the incomparable Antonio Gates, but he is now playing on one foot.  Yet every week Rivers churns out fantastic games and breathes new life into the dead (you are welcome Randy McMichael).

I know ESPN and NBC can't help themselves with the Manning love, but every week Rivers turns nobodies into fantasy darlings and that is why he is the top fantasy QB this year and deserves all the accolades being lobbed toward Manning (who lost the game for his team last night with an atrocious throw and interception).

The truly amazing thing, a November game between Rivers and Kyle Orton features the top two fantasy QB's.  Orton was surprisingly solid last year, and he's only improved upon it this year.  Brandon Lloyd, after multiple disappointing stops, is now a top flight wide receiver.  With these two passing attacks, this looks like a complete shoot out... not so fast.  The Chargers are top-3 in fewest points allowed to opposing QB's and WR's and they always play better as the season moves along.  Neither team has much of a running game, in fact, the Broncos are dead last (a bit deceiving as Knowshon has been banged up for most of the season).

That being said the only teams to shut down the Broncos passing game were the Jets and the Raiders (a wacky game that has to be discounted) and the Chargers aren't as good as the Jets.  Maybe Orton doesn't have an all-time game, but 250 yards and a couple TD's seems to be a certainty.

I think this game will feature a lot of excitement and scoring.  I know it might be difficult to tune into a game featuring two mediocre teams, but tune in tonight for no other reason than to watch Rivers turn another fantasy nobody into this week's must have waiver add.

After tonight's game every NFL team will officially be more than halfway through the season and both these Monday night teams have had an "eventful" first half.

The latest drama effecting the Redskins was the benching of Donovan Mcnabb at the end of a winnable game in favor of a cold Sexy Rexy Grossman.  Sexy Rexy, doing what he does, promptly threw an interception, game over.  The McNabb debacle went through several iterations, Shanahan blamed McNabb's belly and an inability to run the 2-minute offense (the latter reason was especially ludicrous because McNabb has been a QB for how many years? and he's been working with this offense since training camp).

The real story was the fact that this slap in the face topped the previous top QB embarrassment of the season held by Alex Smith when the 49er faithful started a "DAVID CARR" chant.  That was at least somewhat defensive, both QB's are atrocious; but, McNabb is a pro bowl player, champion and consummate professional.  We'll see if he can use this as motivation as he begins his final push for a fat contract.

The rest of the Redskins fantasy lineup is also questionable.  Ryan Torain has been a solid fantasy player over the last few weeks, but he is coming off a hamstring injury and Mike Shanahan is always a wild card and could put in Keiland Williams at any point in time. It looks like Portis is out for this week, but he'll be looming in the coming weeks.

The Eagles are middle of the road in points allowed to QB's and RB's, but top ten against WR's so Santana Moss could be in for a long day.

The best play for the Redskins might be Chris Cooley; the Eagles had a tough time against newly minted starter Jacob Tamme so what will they do against a solid professional like Chris Cooley?

The Eagles are loaded with tasty fantasy starters:  LeSean McCoy is a top-10 running back, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are just outide the top-10 and Vick isn't a top-5 QB merely because he hasn't played enough, but check out his fantasy output in his games where he's played meaningful minutes (21, 22, 32, 25).  Vick's emergence has been a solid development for everyone except Brent Celek, who has been relinquished to nothing more than a blocking TE.

The Redskins Defense is not fantasy scary... they are generous to QB's and WR's and barely in the top half against RB's.

Looking at all that, the Eagles, and their fantasy stars, should dominate.  A thought to keep in the back of your mind–their first game was a 17-12 slugfest; where Vick didn't even finish the game.  However, the Redskins always seem to be involved in ugly games and I'd expect nothing less from tonight's clash.

This game could be hyped as a battle between People Magazine vs. VH1, with all the drama surrounding Big Ben and the tandem of VH1 reality stars flanking Carson Palmer.  We'll leave that side of the story to TMZ and focus on football.

Before last week the Steelers could rightfully make the claim they were the best team in the league, then they were outplayed by the Saints.  Losing to the defending champs on the round is by no means a bad loss, but the Steelers didn't look good and were out muscled for a team that prides itself on being tough... this is a bad omen.

The Steelers "steel curtain" is in full effect – they are top five in least points allowed to QB's/RB's and top ten against wide receivers.  This sets up as a game between a dominating defense and, despite it's overall record, a surprisingly useful Cincinnati fantasy offense.  That being said, Cedric Benson looks like an especially poor start this week – he only has one-100 yard game this year and averages only 3.8 yards per carry. Plus it looks like he is showing the effects of last year's high usage.  Throw in the Steelers no. 2 fantasy run defense and I wouldn't have high hopes for him tonight.

The Bengals passing offense is an anomaly, they are fantasy good, but that hasn't translated into wins. I know you have to hold your nose when starting Carson Palmer, but he's the no. 7 fantasy QB this year. He's a unique combination of atrocious decision making and fantasy hero.  The beneficiary of this fantasy goodness has been Terrel Owens.

Owens rebirth seemed impossible when he was crying on his reality show and at that point it looked like his only potential athletic relevance would come from an appearance on the inevitable, "Battle of the (Reality) Network Stars" TV show.  To his credit, he said he could still play and apparently he can.  On the other hand, what happened to Chad Ochocinco?  It looks like sorting through that march madness dating bracket took away from his football preparation.

The Steelers, defense is fantastic and nothing about the Bengals scares you.  Up till last week Big Ben looked solid, then the Saints pressured him and he looked a little rattled.  We'll see if he can get back to his top ten ability.

The return of Big Ben has tweaked the Pittsburgh focus from running to passing – just look at Rashard  Mendenhall's carries (22, 23, 19, 25, 27...15 & 15).  Mendenhall is the lead back, nobody is going to vulture his carries, but when Ben is around, the Steelers are a passing team.  This bodes well for Mike Wallace and Hines Ward; Ward will work underneath and be a solid PPR guy, while Wallace is the big play guy who really needs to score to maintain value.

Cincinnati always plays the Steelers tough and is at home, throw in the fact that they are in a must win situation and I expect a close hard fought game that probably turns on a terrible turnover by Carson Palmer at the least opportune time.  In the end, the Steelers are too strong and will come out on top.

The last time these two teams met, Houston exercised all kinds of demons and beat down the Colts.  It was an interesting game because Peyton Manning had a great statistical game and Matt Schaub was a non-factor, yet the Texans still had a comfortable victory.  The star of that game... one Arian Foster, who ran for 231 yards and three touchdowns. We could see a very similar game this time around as the Houston passing defense is especially putrid and the Colts come in banged up with Austin Collie, Dallas Clark and Jospeh Addai all out.

Even worse for fantasy owners is that we don't really know if Mike Hart or Donald Brown will get the bulk of Addai's carries.

So exactly what can we count on?  Lots of throwing to Pierre Garcon and Reggie Wayne.

It will also be very interesting to see if Dallas Clark's replacement, Jacob Tamme, can fill those big shoes. After all, when Tamme was drafted in '08, he was proclaimed as a Dallas Clark clone. Peyton Manning has always made stars out of complete blackness, so if Tamme puts up decent numbers tonight, it wouldn't be shocking if he is one of the most added players next week.

On the flip side, the Colts are very generous to opposing running backs, and Arian Foster has already proven he is more than capable of taking advantage of a generous defense. Thus far,  Matt Schaub has been a bit of disappointment, but he is coming off his best game of the season and the Colts passing defense is very middle of the road.

Throw in the fact that Andre Johnson has had some time to rest his ankle and Owen Daniels continues to heal from last year's injury and Schaub has all his targets at near full strength for the first time this season.

Expect a high scoring game in this battle for first place in the very stout AFC South (every team is .500 or better).  It is hard to imagine the Colts would go 0-3 to start division play in this division they have dominated.  Throw in the fact that they are playing in prime time at home and you can expect a Colts victory.

Have I ever told you how beautiful your eyes are?
As all the promos for tonight’s game say, it is "A classic battle of NFC rivals," in reality this is a battle of one team finding itself and the other swirling down the toilet.  If you are a Tony Romo owner, you have reason to worry; that cowboy line gives a new meaning to “ole” blocking; while the Giants have re-discovered their ability to rush the passer. The Giants are allowing the 4th fewest points to opposing QB's; obviously, if the QB isn't getting points then the WR's aren't getting points, so Roy Williams and Miles Austin are also in the "bust" crosshairs.  Well, at least Felix Jones has the opportunity to go off, WRONG, Giants are allowing the 7th fewest points to running backs.

That being said, this is the week where the unimaginable happened, Kenny Britt going for 200+ and 3 TD's after sitting out the first quarter; a "70% chance of PLAYING" Darren McFadden going for nearly 200 total yards and 3 touchdowns, and finally, Cleveland blasting the super bowl champs.  This year, nothing of it makes sense.  I mean, had I told you before the season that in week 7 the Cowboys would have to win to avoid having the same record as the Lions and Panthers, you'd have me watching the People's Court with Rain Man.

Still, if you own Tony Romo you are starting him (he doesn't win in real life, but he puts up fantasy points) and you aren't sitting Miles Austin either.

The Giants fell apart at the end of the year last year and didn't look much better at the beginning of this year.  But in week three their defense fed on the magic elixir known as Jay Cutler/Todd Collins/Bears offensive line, and like Stella, they got their groove back.

Hakeem Nicks, the ultimate homerun vs. strike out WR this year is listed as Questionable, but says he his definitely going to play.  When he is good, he's good (20+ points per game in his 3 biggest games), when he's bad, he's bad (4+ points per game in his three bad games, including a zero).  He is basically the WR equivalent of Matt Forte.  Similarly, you never know what Eli is going to show up.

The Cowboys have faced a brutal schedule (.571 winning percentage) while the Giants (.492 winning percentage) have faced a couple of cream puffs, so trying to judge their relative merits is difficult.  This all boils down to two teams with solid statistical resumes, but one is winning and one isn’t.  If the Cowboys have any life, they come out huge and get a win.  Unfortunately, I’m not sure they haven any fight left in them because everyone’s been saying the same thing for a couple weeks.   This game is loaded with fantasy players and I think all of them have solid games, so start them all without worry.

An already intriguing game became even more so this week with the trade of Randy Moss, the reinstatement of Santonio Holmes, and the introduction of Brett Favre's penis to the Internet.

Let's go in reverse order: Favre, the penis picture is not the best way to close. Mark Sanchez has been hot, but I think Santonio needs a little time to get back into the offense. And if I'm a Jets fan, I'm genuinely terrified of Moss.

Randy always does well when he feels disrespected and switches teams. Throw in the fact that Darrelle Revis continues to talk yak, and Randy has all the incentive he needs to have a huge game.

All that said, this is a battle of two very good defenses, so it's unlikely any team goes off.  Plus, the Vikings are really trying to find themselves on offense and might take a little time to fit Moss in.  But, you still have to assume the Vikings will do whatever they can to get Moss into the end zone—if nothing else, the ol' gunslinger will tell him to go long a couple of times and take a couple shots.

The Jets have been surprisingly kind to opposing wide receivers: They are giving up the ninth most points to them.  This can be somewhat tempered with the fact that they've had a couple of blow outs where the other team had to throw, and they probably employed the always fantasy-friendly "prevent defense."

In the alternative, the Vikings are giving up the sixth least points to opposing wide receivers, but then again, they really haven't faced anyone too daunting.

Both teams are stout against the run, so big games from Adrian Peterson, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Shonn Greene are unlikely.  This promises to be an excellent football game against two Super Bowl contenders, but the most interesting aspect of this game might just be the off-field stories swirling around both teams.

The Vikings are dealing with the Brett Favre sexual harassment fallout and trying to introduce a huge new talent (and ego) in Randy Moss.  The Jets are dealing with the always flapping jaws of Darrelle Revis, their role in the Favre harassment scandal, and the introduction of potential No. 1 receiver Santonio Holmes.

Big fantasy days are unlikely, this looks like a 21-17 type of game.  I'd give the edge to the Jets, since they are at home and have looked like the best team in football over the last couple weeks, while the Vikings haven't played well and are now dealing with all kinds of off-field issues.

Tonight's battle should provide some clarity as to who the second best team is in the AFC East behind the New York Jets.

The Miami Dolphins have looked average offensively (20th in passing; 15th in rushing), while the New England Patriots offense has been impressive (minus a complete meltdown in the second half of the Jets game) leading the league in scoring.  Good thing the Patriots have a dynamic offense because their defense is putrid; Scott Bacula's Fighting Armadillo' s from "Necessary Roughness" could probably hang "half a hundred" on the Patriots.

You never have to worry about the Patriots offensive players (unless you've rolled the dice with one of their running backs) and this year you need not worry about the players going against New England.  You should start everyone tonight and I'd expect a bonanza.

On a personal note, what happened to Ricky Williams? Is he back in a tee-pee smoking the good stuff and practicing yoga poses?  My guess is he's killed a few fantasy teams already–as he was undoubtedly drafted by many as a #2 RB/Flex option and has done nothing to merit that ranking.  Hopefully he rejuvenates, like Shonn Greene did this weekend.

Tom Brady has never had too much trouble with the Miami Dolphins and there is nothing about this particular squad that should scare him.

Also, Wes Welker who has been doubted his whole life has to love sticking it to his former team.  Over the last 3 years he's averaged around eight catches and 100 yards per game against the 'Phins.

Randy Moss is a bit of an enigma–his fantasy stats look respectable through three games mainly because of the touchdowns, but truthfully his nine catches for 139 yards and three TDs are what he's capable of in a single game.  Randy please come through so my high pre-season ranking of you doesn't look so foolish.  If you are starting the Patriots Defense, may God have mercy on your fantasy soul.

As mentioned earlier, the Dolphins have been mediocre on offense and at this point their only fantasy worthy player is Brandon MarshallRonnie Brown has been so-so,(at least he's putting up 5+ yards a carry) and doesn't seem to have any lingering effects of his injury.  Ricky Williams seems to be basking in the glow of his 30 for 30 "Run Ricky Run" special and isn't running with much purpose.  Chad Henne stands to have a good game against that porous New England Defense.

The Patriots Offense is good enough to overcome an above average Miami Defense and the Miami offense is good enough to overcome a poor Patriots defense, so it looks like a good game to start everyone.  If you are down in your fantasy match-up take heart, I think your opponent will be the one with chest pains by the end of the game.

An old school NFC North Battle of undefeated teams.  Green Bay is loaded with talented fantasy players Aaron Rodgers, Jermichael Finley, Donald Driver, Brandon Jackson; if you have them, you are starting them.  We also get a second look at Brandon Jackson, if you started him last week he didn't kill you, but let's hope he continues to grow with the offense.  Green Bay is a juggernaut, it's hard to imagine any team slowing them down.

Chicago is a bit of a surprise thus far, Jay Cutler has taken to the Mike Martz offense and Matt Forte has done a nice job of impersonating Marshall Faulk.

At this point  the  No. 1 receiver is unclear.  Coming into the season everyone was expecting Devin Aromashadu to make the "leap."  Well, he made the "leap" to the bench and didn't record a single catch in week two.  Johnny Knox has been consistently involved over the first couple weeks and we even saw good old Devin Hester make a nice one handed grab for a touchdown last week.

Still, if there is a go to guy in Chicago, it's Matt Forte, who has seen heavy involvement in the passing game over the first couple of weeks.

Picture
Matt Forte
Both teams have solid defenses, so the most likely scenario is that neither team goes crazy and we have a score in the 20's with solid fantasy stats on all sides.

That being said, Green Bay is so good a complete annihilation is always a possibility.   I mean, Jay Cutler has to revert back to the norm (4 interceptions in a half and sulking) at some point, right?

Green Bay is for real, after tonight we'll know if Chicago is a legitimate contender (with dependable fantasy options) or if they are just a nice two week flash in the pan.
