2013 Fantasy Hockey Forecaster, Week 7: Game Picks and Sleepers

Week Six of the 2013-2014 National Hockey League Season is in the books; before we make way for our Week Seven preview, let’s take a look back at last weeks’ news.

We went 33-16 with game picks this week, including an impressive 15-2 on Saturday and Sunday’s contests. This improves our game picking record on the season to an overall mark of 143-82 (.636 win percentage).

Let’s take a look back at the news from last week:

Sunday News:

Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf missed Sunday’s game with an upper-body injury and is currently listed as day-to-day. Getzlaf, according to coach Bruce Boudreau fell during Friday’s morning state, which apparently caused the injury. Getzlaf did not practice Saturday either. Getzlaf scored a hat-trick (the first of his career) on Friday, and now has 10 goals and 12 assists on the season. It doesn’t sound like a serious injury, but given the way he has played so far, owners are surely worried about the star center.

Florida Panthers goaltender Jacob Markstrom was sent down to the AHL on Sunday. The 23-year-old net-minder is on a 2-way deal and thus does not have to pass through waivers. Backup goaltender Scott Clemmensen only has a 1-way contract and would’ve had to pass through waivers, as well as still cost the Panthers his $1.3-million in cap room to keep him down there, while not playing him. The demotion of Markstrom means that the goaltending position belongs solely to Tim Thomas who by the way, is actually still relevant in Fantasy Hockey

Saturday News:

Pittsburgh Penguins forward James Neal returned to the lineup, along with fellow winger Beau BennettNeal is a must start in all fantasy lineups despite coming off a major injury.

New York Islanders forward Thomas Vanek left Saturday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with an upper-body injury. He also missed Sunday’s game as well. He is listed as day-to-day.

Friday News:

We obviously covered this at length in our column on Saturday morning, but the Edmonton Oilers traded defenseman Ladislav Smid and goaltender prospect Olivier Roy to the Calgary Flames for minor league goalie Laurent Brossoit and forward Roman Horak. Additionally, the Oilers signed goaltender Ilya BryzgalovBryzgalov is worth adding in deep formats.

Games by Team:

Four games: Columbus Blue Jackets, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning

Three games: Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, Winnipeg Jets

Two games: Vancouver Canucks

Matchups to Watch:

Friday: Anaheim Ducks @ Carolina Hurricanes:

The Ducks have been the best team in hockey so far this 2013-2014 NHL Season with 31 points over 19 games (the second most games played in the NHL). Furthermore, the Ducks have a 7-3-1 record on the road. The seven road wins are tied with the Vancouver Canucks for the most in the league. The Ducks have three more road games this week: Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, in that order. Importantly though, the Ducks play Carolina after they are scheduled to play Tampa the night before. I would expect Frederik Andersen to start between the pipes for the Ducks on Friday against a Hurricanes team that has been atrocious this year. Andersen has a sparkling 1.67 goals-against average and a glistening .947 save percentage and Carolina’s 32 goals scored is second worst in the league behind the paltry Philadelphia Flyers. Stream Andersen with confidence this week.

Additionally, Ducks forwards should all be looked at this week. These forwards that are widely available include: Mathieu Perreault (57.5% owned), Nick Bonino (7.1% owned), Andrew Cogliano (1.2% owned) and Dustin Penner (43.4% owned). Perreault has 14 points, Bonino has 11 points, Cogliano has nine points, and Penner has 12 points. All have been excellent thus far.

Friday: Los Angeles Kings @ New Jersey:

The Kings have four games this week, all of which are road games. The Kings start their trip with a game in Buffalo on Tuesday, followed by the Islanders on Thursday before heading to New Jersey on Friday. Given the fact that the Kings also play on Sunday (against the Rangers), we expect goaltender Ben Scrivens to get the start against the Devils on Friday. The 27-year-old net-minder from Spruce Grove, Alberta has been used quite sparingly this season, appearing in just five games and recording, one win, a 1.90 goals-against average, and a .924 save percentage. Scrivens is owned in 0.5% of ESPN.com standard leagues and is a great stream against a offensively challenged Devils team (should Scrivens of course, get the call!)
