2014 Fantasy Football: Davante Adams Is About to Bust Out

Three days ago Fox Sports Wisconsin came out with a column titled “Davante Adams ready to show the world why Rodgers, Packers believe in him.”

In said article, here’s a quote from Rodgers: “Davante, he’s open on film a lot. He runs a lot of good routes. He only had one catch last week, but as long as he stays confident and keeps making plays like he is in practice, the ball is going to keep coming his way.”

As Rodgers states, he only had one catch on four targets last week and does not yet have 100 yards total this season. Even so, signs are pointing to Adams breaking out sooner rather than later. This week I think he is worth a flier as a starter on receiver starved teams. Along with the quotes, there are some other notable items to consider with Adams.

First is that he seems to be running away with the number three role. Rodgers clearly likes him, and Jarrett Boykin is the epitome of “just another guy.” Boykin does not have much size or athleticism that sets him apart, and he is currently injured which sets Adams up as the clear number three option in a high-powered offense. He is the clear number three option also due to the Packers lacking any type of production from their tight end position this year. Adams is already third on the team in targets, and it is difficult to see teams continuing to allow Rodgers to throw specifically to Jordy Nelson as often as he has. If Nelson’s targets come down a bit, Adams will see his targets jump from around 3-4 per game to potentially 7-8 per game, which should make him a weekly flex option.

The next thing to consider is the possibility of injuries occurring to either Nelson or Randall Cobb. If one of them goes down even for a week or two, then Adams instantly shoots up to a WR2 as one of the top two targets in a top tier offense. Cobb and Nelson have battled injuries before, and while they are not injury prone, things pop up all the time. Having a guy like Adams on your bench that could jump into a top-20 receiver instantaneously is certainly valuable.

Even without injuries or a reduced target total for Nelson, Adams still seems like he is about to break out. Ted Thompson has been rather phenomenal at picking out second round wide receivers as he has drafted Nelson, Cobb, and Greg Jennings along with Adams in that round. Given Thompson’s affinity for finding talented pass cathcers in the second round and the talk around the team being that Adams is ready to step up, read between the lines and add and/or start Adams if you have a spot open on your roster or are in need of a gamble at the wideout position.
