2014 Fantasy Football: Week 6 Gold Mine

For many leagues we are heading into the halfway point of the season with a large number of leagues only having 12 regular season games. With that in mind there is absolutely no time like now to make the moves that can turn your season around. It is certainly not too late to get things moving even though it may feel like it is.

Much like Week 5, the bye week pool is rather small, which bodes well for each of you. However, if you are the unfortunate one to have either Jamaal Charles or Drew Brees on your rosters, you are missing out are some key players in a key moment of the season.

Although you might be missing one of the best QBs in the league, or one of the best RBs in the league this week, that doesn’t mean you should panic as there are still many viable options remaining on the waiver wire.

As always, we will take a look at those players owned in less than 25% of ESPN leagues. You’ll also notice we added the players percentage of ownership for both Yahoo and NFL leagues as well.

Austin Davis (STL): Davis and the Rams have been coming on strong as of late with down to the wire games at home against Dallas and in Philly against the Eagles. Davis (3.8 | 11 | 2.6) has been a completely intricate part to the success the Rams are having moving the ball, completing approximately 65% of his passes in the last two games while gaining 702 yards and throwing for six touchdowns. Davis has turned the ball over four times in those games including two fumbles this past week, which certainly questions his ability to hold onto the ball. But as long as he keeps completing the rest of his passes with ease, he should continue to rack up fantasy points in droves. In Week 6, Austin leads the Rams against the 49ers who have slowed down opposing QBs in their last two matchups. But they gave up seven passing touchdowns in their first three games which bodes well for teams looking to replace Brees this week.

Jake Locker / Charlie Whitehurst (TEN): As of right now Jake Locker’s (3.9 | 9 | 5.3) status is uncertain and very much up in the air. Prior to going down with a banged up thumb in the second quarter last week, Locker was on point throwing for 79 yards and a touchdown while running for 34 yards and another touchdown. Locker’s x-rays were negative this week, but the swelling of his thumb on his throwing hand raises significant questions as to whether the third year player will be healthy enough to suit up on Sunday. Enter Charlie Whitehurst (0.2 | 1 | 0.1) who reacted marvelously as the backup throwing for 194 yards and 2 scores and completing 13 of 21 passes. The Jaguars are the 30th worst team against the pass giving up a league-high 308.8 yards per game. Pay attention to who is the one starting come 1:00 P.M. on Sunday as whoever it is should shine.

Antone Smith (ATL): Need a big play pick up? Look no further than Smith who has compiled several big plays in 2014. Smith, (3.5 | 23 | 14.1) a fifth-year player, has had three double-digit fantasy games thus far despite only touching the ball 17 times through 5 games. Smith has found the end zone in four of the five games including three straight. The Falcons face Chicago in Week 6 who, despite a nice ranking of 12th against fantasy running backs, have given up a touchdown to opposing running backs in three of the last four weeks.

Mohamed Sanu (CIN): We spoke about Sanu a few weeks ago when AJ Green (CIN) went down earlier this year with a toe injury. Well it looks like we are going to talk about Sanu again now that reports are coming through that Green will fail to make the Bengals Week 6 match up against the Panthers with the same toe acting up again. Sanu (16.3 | 48 | 24.9) has averaged over 15 points per game through four games with at least four catches in three of them. Not only has Sanu been getting it done in the receiving game but also in the passing game as well with two completions for 68 yards and a touchdown. Of course there is no guarantee Sanu will be involved in the passing game, but with AJ going down he will certainly be active receiving passes. The Panthers have given up at least 25 fantasy points to opposing wide receivers in each game so far ranking them 22nd in the league.

Odell Beckham Jr.(NYG): The highly touted wide out entering the 2014 draft saw his first NFL action Sunday when he was finally listed as active following a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the first four weeks of the season. Beckham jumped out to a quick start to his NFL career compiling four receptions, 44 yards and a score in the Giants come-from-behind victory over the Falcons. For the first time in Beckham’s (6.4 | 31 | 8.5) short career he is not listed on the injury report. Although we have to wait some more before naming him a bon-a-fide stud, he certainly is a deep league or flex option if you are missing guys like Brandin Cooks or Marques Colston. The Eagles are currently the 31st ranked defense against opposing wide receivers giving up at least 33 fantasy points in four of their five games including eight touchdowns.

The halfway point in the season may have gotten here quickly, but despite your team’s record there is still plenty of time for your fantasy teams to make changes and turn their seasons around.

Pay attention to the waiver wire and you will be okay. The guys above can help you put up points, make the right decisions for your team and you’ll win your match ups.
