2013 Fantasy Football: Week 14 Target Practice

Week 14’s Target Practice highlights possible replacements at tight end if you lost Rob Gronkowski, and it also focuses on a couple young rookie speedsters making an impact in Indianapolis and Minnesota.

Key: I – Player missed game or left game early due to injury. S – Player was suspended for game. A – Player was inactive. B – Bye week. Most notable players who missed a game due to injury or benching are marked with an S or A. If a lesser-known player was inactive, etc., I just put a 0 in his weekly spot because I don’t know if that player was just inactive, hurt, etc. Ownership numbers are posted in parentheses next to notable players’ names, with ESPN first followed by Yahoo!

Baltimore

Marlon Brown: 6-6-3-8-I-7-4-B-9-3-2-1-11 (60) Dallas Clark: 12-1-7-9-0-6-4-B-1-2-4-4-2-0 (52) Ed Dickson: 0-5-0-3-2-0-2-B-3-4-3-5-2-5 (34) Tandon Doss: A-A-A-9-5-6-3-B-4-1-5-1-0-0 (34) Jacoby Jones: 4-I-I-I-I-2-8-B-8-2-2-6-7-7 (46) Vonta Leach: 4-0-2-2-1-2-1-B-0-0-1-2-0-2 (17) Bernard Pierce: 1-1-2-1-0-2-1-B-0-3-0-3-2 (16) Dennis Pitta: I-I-I-I-I-I-B-I-I-I-I-I-I-11 (11) Ray Rice: 11-3-I-1-7-4-5-B-4-6-5-1-7-5 (59) Torrey Smith: 8-13-9-12-9-4-6-B-8-14-8-4-10-5 (110) Brandon Stokley: 10-5-1-A-A-A-A-B-A-A-A-A-3-1 (20) Deonte Thompson: A-A-A-5-7-0-0-B-4-0-3-I-0-0 (19)

Pitta (1, 13) caught six of his 11 targets for 48 yards and a score. He only played 42 percent of snaps, but that number should go up as he’s the Ravens only legitimate receiving threat outside of Smith. In his breakout 2012 he had eight games (out of 18) with at least 50 yards, and he scored 10 touchdowns, too. I’d recommend picking him up in any league.

Carolina

Ted Ginn Jr.: 1-8-4-B-5-3-2-6-3-4-3-10-4-5 (58) Brandon LaFell: 0-6-5-B-9-4-4-5-9-8-8-5-7-4 (74) Greg Olsen: 10-8-8-B-6-4-4-4-5-3-8-9-7-12 (88) Steve Smith: 8-11-7-B-10-7-6-7-10-11-6-8-4-8 (103) Jonathan Stewart: I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-3-0-0-1-2-1 (7) Mike Tolbert: 1-3-0-B-1-3-0-4-4-3-0-1-4-2 (26) DeAngelo Williams: 3-0-2-B-3-5-1-3-2-2-3-3-0-2 (29)

Olsen should be owned in all leagues, but he’s not started in every league even though he should be. In his past four games he’s averaging almost six catches, 52 yards and .5 touchdowns. This week Carolina faces a Jets team that’s a bottom-six team defending tight ends.

Cleveland

Davone Bess: 10-8-10-6-5-3-6-8-4-B-6-8-5-4 (83) Jordan Cameron: 13-7-11-12-5-6-9-4-5-B-7-10-7-9 (105) Josh Gordon: S-S-19-9-6-9-6-10-7-B-15-17-15-10 (123) Greg Little: 10-12-8-2-5-5-9-3-9-B-6-7-4-4 (84) Willis McGahee: A-A-0-0-2-1-1-2-0-B-2-0-2-1 (11) Chris Ogbonnaya: 3-0-5-5-2-12-2-4-6-B-12-5-5-3 (64) Fozzy Whittaker: 0-0-0-0-0-0-5-2-4-B-5-5-1-7 (29)

It’s nothing fun, but Cleveland plays the Bears this week. Chicago has allowed at least 196 yards rushing in each of the past three games and at least 123 rush yards in each of the past eight games. If you lost Adrian Peterson and need a replacement in a deep league, McGahee (13, 14) or Ogbonnaya (14, 22) could probably be picked up. I’d recommend Ogbonnaya in PPR leagues and McGahee in standard.

Denver

Montee Ball: 0-2-0-0-0-2-0-1-B-0-4-3-2-4 (18) Eric Decker: 7-13-8-7-8-7-13-7-B-5-6-4-12-12 (109) Knowshon Moreno: 3-3-2-1-5-10-6-6-B-8-1-1-5-7 (58) Demaryius Thomas: 11-6-11-10-6-5-9-11-B-10-13-9-6-10 (117) Julius Thomas: 7-9-4-4-12-7-6-3-B-5-5-I-I-7 (69) Wes Welker: 11-8-8-9-6-8-12-10-B-6-10-8-5-10 (111)

Dallas plays San Diego on Thursday this week, and Welker is doubtful to play due to the concussion – his second of the season – he suffered Sunday. Jacob Tamme (1, 6) filled right in for Welker Sunday, playing the same amount of snaps Welker did and catching four passes for 47 yards. This came just two weeks after Tamme filled in for the injured Julius Thomas, catching five passes for 47 yards and a score. In those two games Tamme saw 10 targets on just 78 snaps, a rate better than Welker’s target/snap rate in those two games. I’d bet Welker doesn’t play Thursday and Tamme makes for a good pickup and play against San Diego, which Peyton burned for 330 yards and four scores a few weeks ago.

Green Bay

Brandon Bostick: 0-0-0-B-0-0-0-0-0-3-1-5-I-4 (13) Jarrett Boykin: 0-0-0-B-0-6-10-6-1-13-8-10-3-3 (60) Randall Cobb: 12-10-11-B-8-4-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I (45) James Jones: 2-12-8-B-6-1-I-I-3-7-6-12-5-5 (67) Eddie Lacy: 2-I-I-B-1-1-7-4-0-2-2-6-4-5 (34) John Kuhn: 1-0-0-B-0-2-1-2-0-2-3-4-1-1 (17) Jordy Nelson: 10-4-9-B-7-10-6-8-9-10-9-7-4-4 (97) Andrew Quarless: 0-3-5-B-0-0-1-2-7-4-3-3-2-7 (37) James Starks: 1-5-0-B-0-0-0-0-0-1-0-2-0-0 (9) Myles White: 0-0-0-B-0-0-2-7-1-1-0-0-0-1 (12)

Hopefully we’ve weathered the storm. The Pack sit just one win away from what could be first place in the NFC North, and Aaron Rodgers has a good chance to play this week. He’ll be evaluated Wednesday to see if he can suit up. If he does, obviously every Packers skill players’ stock goes up. If he doesn’t you can still start Nelson and possibly Jones.

Houston

Owen Daniels: 7-5-9-11-9-I-I-B-I-I-I-I-I-I (43) Garrett Graham: 5-5-0-6-5-4-8-B-6-3-13-9-11-14 (89) DeAndre Hopkins: 6-13-7-3-4-5-4-B-6-11-2-4-5-7 (77) Andre Johnson: 16-13-6-12-10-8-6-B-13-12-17-6-9-21 (149) Dennis Johnson: I-I-I-I-I-I-0-B-0-1-0-2-2-1 (6) Keshawn Martin: 0-2-3-6-1-2-0-B-0-0-5-2-1-6 (28) DeVier Posey: 0-0-4-0-2-1-2-B-4-6-4-1-0-1 (25) Ben Tate: 2-4-4-1-2-4-3-B-2-5-6-6-0-4 (43)

In Graham’s two best games of 2013 Matt Schaub and Case Keenum have split time at quarterback, making it hard to predict how Graham (33, 37) will do going forward. In last week’s game both quarterbacks completed four passes to Graham, with Schaub connecting with him on a score. In Week 11 Keenum completed five passes, including a score, to Graham. He’s seen at least nine targets in each of his last four games, and his next two matchups are Indy, which has given up multiple touchdown passes in six of its last nine games; and Denver, which is the fourth worst team defending tight ends.

Indianapolis

LaVon Brazill: A-A-A-A-A-0-0-B-2-5-1-5-8-4 (25) Donald Brown: 0-0-1-2-2-2-3-B-2-5-1-2-3-6 (29) Coby Fleener: 1-8-2-7-3-6-5-B-5-10-10-8-5-9 (79) Darrius Heyward-Bey: 4-5-5-6-6-2-7-B-6-6-3-6-5-3 (64) T.Y. Hilton: 5-12-4-9-6-8-11-B-12-8-9-9-7-5 (105) Da’Rick Rogers: A-A-A-A-A-A-A-B-A-A-A-A-0-9 (9) Trent Richardson 0-0-3-1-1-2-0-B-3-5-5-2-6 (28) Griff Whalen: 0-3-0-0-0-0-0-B-9-5-3-0-0 (20)

Brazill scored twice last week, but had only one other catch on just four targets, which was just sixth on the team. He’s not really worth a pickup. Rogers saw his first extended action of the season, catching six passes for two scores and 107 yards. He played 68 percent of snaps, which is a good number for the youngster and was just below Hilton’s and Brazill’s totals. Most of Rogers yards were gained after the catch, and his first touchdown was a 69-yarder that he looked good on, breaking two tackles and racing to the end zone. He’s not worth a pickup in 10- or most 12-team leagues but in deep leagues he could be a late-season find.

Miami

Charles Clay: 6-7-6-6-6-B-3-8-3-8-7-7-10-7 (84) Brian Hartline: 14-8-6-4-7-B-11-6-5-8-13-5-15-5 (107) Rishard Matthews: 0-0-4-2-0-B-1-6-4-14-6-7-3-2 (49) Lamar Miller: 1-2-3-3-0-B-3-3-4-3-2-4-1-4 (33) Daniel Thomas: 1-1-1-1-2-B-1-1-2-0-1-2-I-1 (14) Mike Wallace: 5-11-5-7-16-B-10-10-8-7-6-10-9-4 (108)

I’ll just assume the 47 percent of ESPN leagues and 31 percent of Yahoo! leagues that Clay is unowned in are dead leagues, right? He has at least 80 yards in three of his last four and ranks sixth among tight ends in yards on the season.

Minnesota

John Carlson: 1-2-2-2-B-2-2-2-6-7-7-5-6-4 (48) Toby Gerhart: 0-0-2-1-B-2-3-2-1-0-3-1-1-1 (17) Greg Jennings: 7-6-6-4-B-10-10-3-9-4-I-3-9-10 (81) Cordarrelle Patterson: 1-2-4-2-B-2-6-3-4-4-9-11-4-7 (59) Adrian Peterson: 4-2-6-1-B-4-4-3-3-2-3-1-4-2 (39) Jerome Simpson: 8-5-8-11-B-7-9-3-5-6-2-4-9-8 (85) Jarius Wright: 2-2-4-1-B-2-5-0-5-2-4-1-3-1 (32)

Patterson (5, 27) has scored in the last two games, once rushing and once receiving. He looked great Sunday in the snow, catching five of his seven targets and taking one 79 yards for a touchdown. He’s seen his playing time go up each of the past two weeks; he’s the Vikes’ best big-play threat outside of Peterson. Take a chance on him, as he’s active in the pass, rush and return game.

Pittsburgh

Le’Veon Bell: I-I-I-5-B-3-1-7-10-3-5-5-9-3 (51) Antonio Brown: 7-9-13-12-B-11-7-13-9-11-13-10-8-8 (131) Jerricho Cotchery: 7-9-4-6-B-0-4-4-8-2-5-1-6-6 (62) Felix Jones: 0-0-2-1-B-1-1-3-3-0-0-1-0-0 (12) Heath Miller: I-I-4-8-B-7-4-6-5-5-10-9-4 (62)  Emmanuel Sanders: 12-10-8-8-B-6-2-11-11-6-2-7-11-2 (96)

Another possible Gronk replacement? Miller (16, 51), who’s averaging seven targets, six catches and 62 yards in his last four games. He’s also played every snap the last two weeks.
